A Happy, Hoppy, Easter

Sorry for the cheesy title, but I'm pretty sure that particular bad pun is required by law.

Just wanted to wish everyone who stops in here a very Happy Easter (or at least a happy Sunday if you don't celebrate Easter).

Now I'm off to eat dinner with my relatives who will all give me strange looks because they've most likely forgotten (yet again...) that I don't eat pork.

(Weird tangent, but am I the only who finds it odd that the "traditional" meal for Christmas and Easter involves food that the man whose life is being celebrated couldn't eat?)

It took my family years to decide to offer stuff I'd eat at holidays. I'll do birds and fish, but no four-legged critters. It's been 16 years since I've had beef!

Someone actually gave me a plausible explanation for the pork.

Apparently, a ham was (usually) the last thing left in the smokehouse before the invention of refrigerators/freezers, and Easter was the last big meal at the end of winter. Pulling a smoked ham out of the smokehouse was easier than slaughtering another animal.

Since Easter comes at the end of Lent, and a lot of people don't eat "meat" during Lent (fish, birds, but not beef or pork, etc.) It was a meal they looked forward to, too.

Makes sense to me... but I still hate pork.

I'm still in the doghouse at Chez Reese for spilling the beans about the Easter Bunny. Man, am I a terrible mother! But, hey, at least the ham turned out all right, and Josin, I would definitely have something non-porcine for you to eat if you ever showed up. Special orders don't upset us!
